State schools vs. private schools: a detailed comparison

State schools

  • Application deadlines: Reception deadline: 15/01; Year 7 deadline: October 31st
  • Applications outside of deadlines: In-year application possible
  • Response time for applications: 3 days to 4 weeks
  • Great for primary schools
  • Great for mixed-gender education
  • Great for Special Education Needs

Private schools

  • Also called: Independent schools; Public schools
  • Applications: before arriving in the UK
  • Where to apply: With the school
  • When to apply: you can apply in advance
  • Application fees £100 - £300 per application
  • Tuition fees £18,000 to £40,000 per year per child
  • Application deadlines: Dependent on school
  • Applications outside of deadlines: In-year application possible
  • Response time for applications 3 days to 2 weeks
  • Great for secondary schools
  • Great for single-gender education
  • Great for extra-curricular activities, such as arts and sports
