State schools in North London

North London is an education powerhouse. Three of the top-ranking schools in the Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 guide to the best schools in the country are state institutions located north of the river.

  • Henrietta Barnett School (National School of the Year): This non-denominational grammar school in Hampstead is Ofsted-rated “outstanding”. Consistently one of the top-performing state schools in the country, it has built a reputation for academic excellence – both locally and nationally.

  • Mossbourne Community Academy (Secondary School of the Year): This was one of the country’s first academies when it opened its doors in 2004. Located in Hackney, a borough with widespread educational underachievement, it has re-imagined what inner-city, non-selective co-education can be.
