Are state schools good in London?
State schools in London aren’t just good, they’re outstanding: more schools in London have been ranked good or outstanding by the government’s Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) than any other region in England.
According to the Sunday Times 2023 Parent Power guide, a staggering nine of the top ten state primary schools in the UK are in London; four of the top ten comprehensive schools; and the top four secondary and grammar schools.
London’s impressive selection of state schools is reflected in its lead over the rest of the country in terms of GCSE results in 2022 – outperforming other regions by a significant margin: 32.6% of all exams taken in London achieved 7/A or above, compared to the lowest performing region where 22.4% of exams were given top grades.
