Is registering with a GP the same as with the NHS?
Registering with a General Practitioner (GP) and with the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK are related but not identical processes. This is especially true for expats arriving in the country.
Registering with a GP
The first step is to find a GP practice in your local area. You can do this by searching online through the NHS website or visiting local practices directly. To register, you must complete a GMS1 registration form and provide identification and two proofs of permanent address. This could be in the form of a utility bill and council tax. Some practices may also require additional information like previous medical records or details about any ongoing treatments.

Once you register with a GP, if you don’t already have an NHS number, they will send one to you by post. The NHS number is a unique identifier that tracks your medical records across the NHS system. You only need to apply once – and you keep it for life, even if you leave the UK and come back a few years later.
Registering with the NHS
When you register with a GP, you are automatically registered with the NHS. This means you can access a range of NHS services, including specialist treatments, hospital care and emergency services.
As an expat, you must check you’re eligible for free NHS treatment. Generally, if you plan to stay in the UK for more than six months, you should qualify. However, some expats may need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their visa application, which grants access to the NHS.
