Hampstead in North London

Hampstead is one of the areas of London which is well-known, not just amongst residents of the city, but also from expats looking to move to a family-oriented, elegant area.

Hampstead Village

Nestled on the south slope of the Heath, the hill that dominates north London, Hampstead Village has kept its traditional, Dickensian feel, with cobbled streets, traditional pubs and small Victorian houses, where indeed, many painters and writers lived during the 19th century.

It is currently one of the most expensive and trendy areas of London. It has the appeal of being surrounded by greenery and nature, but with direct access to the centre of London via the Northern Line, making it one of most popular destinations for expat families with a considerable budget.

Hampstead Garden Suburb

The architecture and scenery of this area changes once you move into the Garden Suburb which is in the north of the Heath.

This area is an example of early twentieth-century domestic architecture and town planning by Henrietta Barnett. The aim of the project being to create a new suburb where nature was paramount and the busy, urban feel of central London was not present. The result is the creation of a tranquil and quiet area where even church bells cannot be heard!

Nowadays, Hampstead Garden Suburb is very residential and having grown in size towards East Finchley, it is an area for families that favour peace and quiet amongst the natural space.

Borough: Barnet

Typical property: a 20’s style house with a garden

Price for a four bedroom house: starting from £3,000/month for well located houses near the East Finchley tube station but the price can double once you get into the more historic area.

West Hampstead and South Hampstead

These two areas located to the west of Finchley Road have extremely good transport links with nearby tube and train stations.

The streets are mainly filled with Victorian houses, similar to those in North Fulham. This area is becoming increasingly popular for French families, given its proximity to two French schools, the Winston Churchill School in Wembley as well as the CFBL in Kentish Town.

Both the Kilburn area and the side near Finchley Road, with its residential feel, are very popular.
