School applications in London
How to apply for schools in London
This process varies depending on the type of school you are applying to, which school year your child will enter, and finally whether they are due to start at the beginning of a new academic year or mid-year.
This is a general overview:
How and when to apply for a place for the next academic year (September):
English State Schools:
You must have a London address and you apply directly to your local Borough between mid-September and mid-January for a reception place for the following September. For example, if your child is going to join a Reception class in September 2020, you must apply between September 2019 and January 2020. Offers of places are sent out on the national offer day in mid-April. If you cannot apply before mid-January for a reception class, you can still apply after January, but chances of obtaining a place in a top choice school will be reduced.
For all other academic levels than reception, you can apply anytime throughout the school year, but you cannot apply in advance for any other level than Reception.
Independent UK / International Schools:
You can apply without having a UK address. Each school has its own deadline and you must apply to each school individually. In general the earlier you apply, the better your chances of obtaining a place at the school of your choice.
How and when to apply for a place starting at other times
If your move to London does not coincide with the start of a new academic year, apply as follows:
English State Schools:
Contact your local Borough to find out the procedure once you have a UK address. For all other academic levels than reception, you can apply anytime throughout the school year, but you cannot apply in advance for any other level than Reception.
Independent UK / International Schools:
You can apply without having a UK address. Apply to each school individually and they will advise you about entry requirements and availability of places for your child’s school year. In some cases, you may need to join a waiting list.
